Vietnam's rice exports are expected to rise to 6.3-6.5 million tonnes this year from 6.24 million tonnes last year due to strong demand, Nguyen Ngoc Nam, chairman of the Vietnam Food Association, said on Tuesday (August 30). Vietnam is the world's third-largest rice exporter, with rice exports in the first eight months of the year up 19 percent year-on-year to 4.7 million tonnes.
Nam said Vietnam's rice export prices are also expected to rise in the coming months as production costs increase and bad weather in several major producing countries hurt production. He said production costs, especially fertilizer prices, had risen sharply due to inflationary pressures. We also found that several countries suffered severe droughts and floods, such as China, India and some European countries, which could affect the global food supply. The Philippines will remain the largest export market for Vietnamese rice this year.
