Vietnam's Fruit And Vegetable Exports To China Continue To Face Difficulties

Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports to China are expected to continue to face difficulties after the country's fruit and vegetable market share in China dropped sharply in the first five months of this year, said Dang Phuoc Vuan, general secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, reports Vietnam Customs Online on June 8.

On June 8, at a forum organized by Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on "strengthening sustainable development solutions for the production and marketing of key fruit products in the South", Dang Phuoc Vuan, secretary general of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that in the first five months of this year, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports amounted to US$1.4 billion, down 17 percent year-on-year. The reason is that the export of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables to China has dropped significantly.

In addition to rubber recently all types of fruit and vegetable exports to China have declined. In the first five months of this year, China imported 742,000 tonnes of bananas, up 10 per cent year-on-year; among them, Vietnamese bananas took 43 per cent of the market share, surpassing the Philippines' 28 per cent.

Dang Phuoc Vuan said that in the near future, China will increase its banana imports to Vietnam. The reason for this is that Vietnam is geographically closer to China than other countries. In addition, the area under banana cultivation in China has decreased due to the increase in input costs, land rental costs and labour costs.
