According to a report by the National Rice Management Policy Committee, India's rice exports accounted for the world's top spot with about 11.23 million tons of global rice exports in January-August 2022, followed by Thailand's 4.75 million tons, Vietnam's 4.25 million tons, Pakistan's 2.47 million tons and the United States' 1.49 million tons, Thai Headliner reported on Sept. 12.
Compared with the same period last year, the export volume of Thai rice in 2022 increased from 3.1 million tons to 4.75 million tons, an increase of 53.23%, so the government also reset the rice export target from the original 7 million tons set to 7.5 million tons. The positive factors for the increase in Thai rice exports came from several sources. On one hand, the devaluation of the Thai baht compared to the US dollar has put Thai rice prices at an advantageous position. On the other hand, Thai rice exports to Middle East countries, especially Iraq, have seen a significant increase in trading volume compared to the same period last year. In addition, due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Thai rice is also imported to replace wheat and corn in the animal feed industry.
