The latest rice market outlook report released by the US Department of Agriculture shows that Sri Lanka's rice production in 2021/22 was lowered to 2.645 million tons, 279,000 tons lower than the previous month's forecast and 22% lower than the previous year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said rice production was revised down from the previous month because of a sharp drop in maha rice production for the February-April period. The year-on-year decline in rice production was mainly due to a government ban on the use of non-organic fertilizers. According to reports, maha rice production has decreased by 49% year-on-year.
