Peruvian Orange Exports Plunge 81% in First Half

Peruvian orange exports fell sharply in the first half of 2022, according to Peruvian agricultural media.

 

Oranges are the largest and most productive citrus fruit in Peru. In 2020, the orange planting area in Peru is about 29,000 hectares, accounting for 37.5% of the total citrus planting area. The production of oranges reached 553,000 tons, which is equivalent to the production of oranges.

 

From January to June, the total export volume was 269 tons, and the export value was only 226,000 US dollars. Compared to the same period last year, orange exports fell by 81% in volume and 71% in value. At the same time, the average price of Peruvian oranges in the international market also fell by 59% to only US$0.84/kg.

 

The main export destination of Peruvian oranges is Ecuador, also in South America, accounting for 57% of the total export volume. This is followed by the United States with 22% and Colombia with 6%.

 

Among them, Ecuador imported 158 tons of Peruvian oranges at a price of US$107,000, a 25% decrease in import volume and a 19% decrease in value compared with 2021. The United States imported 33 tons of Peruvian oranges at a price of US$32,000. The import volume increased sevenfold, and the average price fell by 20% to US$0.96/kg.
