Peruvian avocado exports increased by 30% in 2021 compared to the previous season, totalling more than 550,000 tonnes and worth more than US$1 billion, according to data from Peru's National Agricultural Health Institute (Senasa), which expects Peruvian avocado exports to increase by 8%-10% this year.

The Netherlands continues to be the largest export destination for Peruvian avocados, with around a third of all avocados going to the Netherlands, according to records from the Peruvian National Agricultural Health Institute. This is followed by Spain and North America, which each account for around 16% of exports. It is worth noting that Peru's avocado exports to Chile accounted for 14% of the total. It is expected that exports to Chile will continue to increase in the face of tight and costly shipping.

In addition to the challenges of tight shipping, Peruvian avocado exports were hit by protests and strikes in the domestic transport sector, which affected agricultural exports from the end of March to the beginning of April, with a significant drop in avocado shipments. Local avocado exports have fallen significantly as a result of the strike.
