The latest report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Overseas Agricultural Service shows that Pakistan's rice production in 2022/23 is expected to be 8.6 million tons, down from an earlier forecast of 9 million tons due to hot and dry weather during rice transplanting. This summer came early this year, with very high temperatures and no rainfall in April and May, causing river levels to be 45% lower than normal, reducing irrigation sources. Water shortages in Sindh province in May delayed rice planting.
