Nitrogen fertilizer refers to a unit fertilizer that uses nitrogen (N) as the main component and has a designated amount of N. It can be applied to the soil to provide plant nitrogen nutrition.

Nitrogen fertilizer is the fertilizer with the largest amount of fertilizer production and use in the world; the appropriate amount of nitrogen fertilizer plays an important role in increasing crop yields and improving the quality of agricultural products.

Nitrogen fertilizer can be divided into ammonia nitrogen fertilizer, ammonium nitrogen fertilizer, nitrate nitrogen fertilizer, nitrate ammonium nitrogen fertilizer, cyanamide nitrogen fertilizer and amide nitrogen fertilizer according to the nitrogen group. The main raw material for the production of chemical nitrogen fertilizers is synthetic ammonia (the Haber process plant for synthetic ammonia was built in 1909 and was first industrialized in Germany and became the basis of the nitrogen fertilizer industry).

In the 1940s and 1950s, ammonium sulfate was the main nitrogen fertilizer variety. In the 1960s, ammonium nitrate was added; since the 1970s, urea has become the dominant nitrogen fertilizer. Ammonium bicarbonate is one of the main nitrogen fertilizers produced in China in the 1980s.
