After the founding of New China, the nitrogen fertilizer industry developed rapidly before the phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. In 1953, the annual output of nitrogen fertilizer in my country was 50,000 tons based on nutrients, which exceeded the highest annual output of 48,000 tons in 1941 in history.
After the first and second five-year plans for national economic development, by 1965, the national nitrogen fertilizer production had reached 1.037 million tons (N), an increase of nearly 10 times over 1953. Later, after 10 years of large, medium, and small fertilizer plants from 1969 to 1978, the country built more than 1,000 small nitrogen fertilizer plants and more than 10 large nitrogen fertilizer plants with an annual output of 300,000 tons of synthetic ammonia.
By 1983, the national nitrogen fertilizer production soared to 11.094 million tons (N), becoming the world's second nitrogen fertilizer producer after the former Soviet Union. In 1991, the national nitrogen fertilizer production reached 15.1 million tons, ranking first in the world. In 2005, my country produced 46.298 million tons of synthetic ammonia and 32.007 million tons of nitrogen fertilizer (equivalent to pure nitrogen), of which 41,471,300 tons of urea (physical volume).
In 2006, the national output of agricultural nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers (equivalent to pure) was 55,927,900 tons, an increase of 8.0% year-on-year compared with 2005; from January to November 2007, the national output of agricultural nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers (equivalent to pure) was 52,485,800 tons, compared with 2006. A year-on-year increase of 13.1%.
