European Commission Lowers EU Maize Production Further To 55.5 Million Tonnes in 2022

The European Commission released its monthly report, lowering its 2022 EU maize production forecast to 55.5 million tonnes, down from the 59.3 million tonnes forecast at the end of August, which would also be the lowest yield in 15 years. The 6.4 per cent cut in production marks the Commission's third consecutive significant cut in maize production, mainly reflecting lower area or yield forecasts for Bulgaria, Germany, Croatia, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.

The European Commission raised its forecast for EU maize imports in 2022/23 to 21 million tonnes, up from 20 million tonnes expected a month earlier, and lowered its forecast for EU maize exports to 3.5 million tonnes from 4 million tonnes. Feed use of EU maize was lowered by 4.2 million tonnes to 60.5 million tonnes.
