Chile's Wine Exports Up in Value And Volume in Q1

Chilean wine exports from January to March 2022 totalled 209 million litres, up 0.9% year-on-year, while total exports amounted to US$436.4 million, up 0.6% year-on-year, according to a new report released by the Chilean Agricultural Research and Policy Office (Odepa).

Specifically, in the first three months of this year, Chile exported 96.2 million litres of wine with a designation of origin label, with exports valued at US$319.6 million and an average export price of US$3.32 per litre, down 1.9% year-on-year, reports the website PortalPortuario Chile. China was the main export destination for Chilean wines with appellation of origin labels (13,893 litres, -610%), with the UK (12,248 litres, +2460%) and Brazil (10,994 litres, -1000%) in second and third place.

During the same period, Chile exported 90.6 million litres of wine in bulk, up 3.8%, and $85.2 million in value, up 14.1%. The main buyers of Chilean bulk wine were the United States (26,866 litres, +1%), with the United Kingdom (19,358 litres, +18%) and China (18,430 litres, +30%) in the second and third places.

In addition, Chilean sparkling wine exports fell by 0.8% to 0.7 million litres and by US$2.9 million to 4.8%.

The latest analysis by Pau Roca, Director General of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), said that global wine consumption showed some recovery in 2021, but that 2022 is full of uncertainty due to the global supply chain crisis, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the new crown varietal strain and rising energy prices.
