Chile Added 14 Kinds Of Frozen Fruits Exported To China, Of Which 8 Kinds Are Approved For The First Time For Import

On December 13, Chile and China signed the Frozen Fruit Protocol. The number of Chilean frozen fruits allowed to enter China has increased significantly from 3 types to 17 types. This is an important milestone for Chile's agricultural export sector.

Chile Minister of Agriculture María Emilia Undurraga signed an agreement with the Chinese Ambassador to Chile Niu Qingbao. After the signing of the new agreement, Chile’s frozen fruits exported to China increased to 17 types: raspberry, boysenberry, cranberry, apple, avocado, cherry, custard apple, grape, kiwi, peach, mango, papaya, pineapple, Pomegranate, blueberry, blackberry and strawberry. Prior to this, China only allowed the import of frozen strawberries, blackberries and blueberries from Chile.

In 2020, Chile exported 171,000 tons of frozen fruits, with an export value of 435 million U.S. dollars, of which berries alone exceeded 340 million U.S. dollars. The frozen berries exported from Chile are dominated by blueberries and strawberries, accounting for 29% and 28% respectively, followed by raspberries (16%) and blackberries (8%).

China is the fifth largest export destination of Chilean frozen fruits. In 2020, it imported a total of 11,000 tons, valued at 23 million U.S. dollars. It is worth mentioning that this is the first time that China has approved the import of frozen raspberries, apples, custard apples, grapes, kiwis, peaches, papaya and pomegranates from abroad. There are currently 16 types of frozen fruits that China allows to import. After the signing of the agreement with Chile, the types of frozen fruits entering the Chinese market will also increase significantly.
