23. SOLUBILITY: can be mixed with any proportion of water, in addition to petroleum ether, soluble in general organic solvents. It absorbs 30% (by weight) of hydrogen chloride, 30% (by weight) of hydrogen nitrogen dioxide and 65% (by weight) of sulfur dioxide at 20 °C and is insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons other than acetylene. Synthetic method：

The Dimethyl sulfoxide is usually made by dimethyl sulfide oxidation process, and there are different production processes due to the different oxidants and oxidation methods used.

1. Dimethyl sulfide was synthesized from methanol and carbon disulfide by methanol carbon disulfide method using-Al2O3 as catalyst, and then oxidized with nitrogen dioxide (or nitric acid) to produce Dimethyl sulfoxide.

2. The hydrogen peroxide process, in which acetone is used as a buffer, causes the dimethyl sulfide to react with the hydrogen peroxide. This method is not suitable for large scale production because of the high cost of Dimethyl sulfoxide.

3. Nitrogen dioxide process, in which methanol and hydrogen sulfide are used to form dimethyl sulfide in the presence of Aluminium Oxide, sulfuric acid reacts with Sodium Nitrite to form nitrogen dioxide; Dimethyl sulfide is then oxidized with nitrogen dioxide in the gas-liquid phase at 60-80 °C to form Dimethyl sulfoxide, or directly with oxygen to form Dimethyl sulfoxide, which is then distilled under reduced pressure, into A Dimethyl sulfoxide product. This method is a more advanced production method.

4. In the dimethyl sulfate process, dimethyl sulfoxide is prepared by the reaction of dimethyl sulfate with sodium sulfide; sulfuric acid reacts with Sodium Nitrite to give nitrogen dioxide; dimethyl sulfoxide is oxidized with nitrogen dioxide to give crude dimethyl sulfoxide, which is then neutralized, after distillation, the purified dimethyl sulfoxide is obtained. In addition, Dimethyl sulfoxide is produced by dimethyl sulfide by anodic oxidation.

Refining method: After vacuum distillation of Dimethyl sulfoxide, add alumina and leave overnight. The middle distillate is collected at 266.6 ~ 399.9 PA and 50 °C in a 50 cm high distillation tower filled with ceramic saddle-shaped packing. Or Dimethyl sulfoxide is heated with CAH2 for a day, and is distilled at reduced pressure, dried with a molecular sieve, and then distilled at reduced pressure under a stream of nitrogen. It can also be refined by fractional crystallization.
